Specialty Areas: Business Ethics/Management Description: The Yale Divinity School Center for Faith and Culture will be appointing postdoctoral or postgraduate associates in the area of business ethics/management for a period of up to three years (non-renewable) beginning May 1, 2010. Applicants must hold an advanced degree (completed by the start of the appointment), doctoral work is preferred. The appointed candidates will be expected to conduct research on a project: Empirical Evidence of Spiritual Capital in Business Enterprises. Spiritual Capital, as defined by this study, is the fund of beliefs, examples, and commitments that are transmitted from generation to generation through a religious tradition, and which attach people to the transcendental source of human happiness. This research will investigate 24 topical areas, each studied in a single global company case study, identifying the values and virtues that contribute to flourishing enterprises. Specific attention will be given to: the role and scope of personal religious ethics on economic decisions faced by all persons and groups, especially firms; the exegetical, economic, and historical roots and traditions, which give rise to contrasting work ethics and economic systems as evidenced in corporate cultures around the globe; the role of societal institutions based on faith ranging from companies to trade unions to non-governmental and intermediating structures; the impact of religion on conduct and rules as employees and employers, consumers and producers, and customers at every level of existence; the degree to which religious practices and policies directly or indirectly affect economic behavior, choices and economic policy and the behavior and especially the organization and management of firms; and the role of spiritual capital as the basis for entrepreneurship in specific firms. Fellows will contribute to the research for the case studies, and may also be asked to write articles on findings for popular and academic journals and present information about the case studies at conferences. Fellows may also be involved, in a limited capacity, in strategic planning for conferences, colloquia and workshops, among other duties. Fellows will be expected to live in New Haven.
