"Post Doc" level position for PhDs with potential to become group leader

Job description

The primary research goal is making optimal use of the extensive data streams of weather radars in making more accurate and precise forecasts and warnings for severe weather. To this end, you run research projects, supervise junior researchers, and obtain project funding.

You participate in international research networks, and keep in touch with user demands. You work on the improvement of data products, weather observations and forecasts, and publish your results in peer-reviewed journals. We expect you to provide expert advice on other ground-based remote-sensing matters, and to contribute to establishing the strategy of the department.

Requirements

Applicants should have a PhD degree in a relevant discipline, such as physics, meteorology or mathematics. You can conduct research independently, and combine analytical skills with creative problem solving ideas. You have excellent communication skills. Also, you have proven management capabilities. You have a thorough knowledge of meteorological observing systems and/or radar systems and/or data assimilation methods. You have experience in developing processing algorithms or meteorological/physical models. You can work with state-of-the-art ICT tools.

Conditions of employment

Depending on qualifications and experience: 2850,- 4.965,- per month gross.

You will recieve a fixed contract with a 2 year probational period.

KNMI (Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute)

In the Netherlands, KNMI (Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute) is known mainly for its weather forecasts and warnings, but is does a lot more in its capacity as a national data and knowledge centre for weather, climate research and seismology. It disseminates weather information to the public at large, the government, aviation and the shipping industry in the interest of safety, the economy and a sustainable environment. KNMI was founded by Royal Decree on 31 January 1854. C.H.D. Buys Ballot (1817-1890), its first general director, chose to establish KNMI at the Sonnenborgh observatory in Utrecht. In 1897, the Institute moved to De Bilt, where its headquarters is still located today. In all, KNMI has some 500 employees.

Weather Service Research and Development

The Weather Service Research and Development department conducts both strategic and applied research. Weather radar data are among the most important nowcasting products of KNMI. Improving the processing of weather radar data and the application of weather radar in nowcasting and forecasting applications is an active area of research. KNMI is a partner in the EUMETNET OPERA programme for the harmonization and exchange of European weather radar data.
